The Lessons:

Students learn fundamental piano techniques: posture and positioning in playing, musical control and expression. In addition to these techniques, the student will learn music theory (the science and laws that influence music), ear training (playing by ear), composition, and improvisation.   If a student would like to focus more on one of these categories, we can arrange to spend more time on that specific skill.

Lessons are taught in my home on a console piano.   I am located on Barrington Avenue.   Street parking is available and plentiful during the day.   In addition, there are two parks next door with ample spaces for short-term parking.

Payment:

1. Lesson payment is due monthly by the 10th of the month. Invoices are sent through email and can be paid in either check or cash.
2. Payments made after the 10th of the month incur a $20 late fee.
3. If payment has not been received by the end of the month, lessons will be discontinued until payment is received.
4. Generally a month contains 4 - 5 lessons (once a week).
5. The introductory lesson is always free.

1. A cancelled lesson always recieves a make-up lesson to be used within that same month.
2. A make-up lesson cancelled by the student will not be rescheduled.
3. "No Shows" do not qualify for make-up lessons.
4. Lessons cancelled by the teacher are refunded or rescheduled according to   the student's preference.

Buying or Renting a Piano or Keyboard:

While it is not crucial for the student to buy or rent a piano, it will greatly help in learning and developing the specific skillset of playing the instrument.   Electronic keyboards can be a substitute, but will in no way replace time spent on a real piano.   In many cases, a used piano can be bought from classifieds or through craigslist for about the same cost of a new keyboard.   Whichever the case, I encourage my students to spend at least some of their practice time duing the week at a real piano.

If a keyboard is decided upon, I recommend getting a full size, or 88-key model.   Also a weighted action keyboard will feel and react much more like a real piano than a keyboard with non-weighted action.

I recommend Keyboard Concepts for piano rental if you are not ready to purchase a piano. You'll find their information under the "Links" tab.
